University is a haven of opportunities. . . for students, assignments, fieldwork, lecturers, clinical educators.
For students:
- Put OOFRAS brochures on student notice boards to start a student network
- Student Association BBQ to support a refugee project/event in the community
- Browse OOFRAS site for past projects, can you take it a step forward?
- Use your assessments as opportunities to explore refugee and role emerging issues
For assignments:
- Cultural competency eg review a service
- Service development/ review eg life skills group
- Literature review eg occupational deprivation
- Needs analysis eg occupational issues of refugee children
- Grant writing assignment eg partners with local agency
For field work:
- Seek a innovative fieldwork experience co-supervised by an OOFRAS OT (trans-cultural mental health centre, migrant settlement agency, refugee health clinic, torture and trauma agency, non government agency for asylum seekers, overseas if you can afford it!)
For lecturers:
- Talk to the OOFRAS Coordination team about guest lectures (occupational issues of refugees, transcultural mental health etc)
For OTs and clinical educators:
- Co-supervise a fieldwork placement with a refugee agency
- Offer a refugee topic for a honors research project
- Be a mentor for an OOFRAS OT student or student group
