LATEST FUNDRAISER EVENT FOR MILPERA LIFESKILLS CLINIC

ERITREAN BUFFET

MU'OOZ restaurant, Moorooka

24 May 2008

Thank-you all for your amazing support and attendance of the Eritrean Buffet on the 24th May 2008.

The OOFRAS and Mu'ooz team had a wonderful time hosting such an event, the first of its kind any of us had experienced and glad it went without a hitch thanks to your patience and enthusiasm!!

We ended up with a mass of 100 people in attendance and the restaurant packed to the brim which was much more than any of us were expecting!!

Tallying up ticket sales, donations, jelly bean guessing, raffle and auction money we arrived a grand total of more than $3000!!  This will contribute to helping ensure the UQ OT Lifeskills project at Milpera is funded ongoing for second semester of 2008.

Everyone has been extremely generous with their time and money, so thanks everyone for enthusiastically joining in the fun and I bet some of you scored some great raffle prizes!!

 "THANK YOU's"

We must thank again those who made this event so successful.

Thanks Clarissa for your courage and inspiration to dream and scheme, without your spirit to guide us all, it would not have been dreamt up and thought possible!

Thanks to Crissy, Jess, Clarissa and Bo for the true TEAM effort and all the amazing effort in all the preparations including photo collages, gathering the amazing raffle prizes, name tags and much more.  Thanks Navid for your amazing work on the Buffet Menus – really a professional finish J.

Thanks to Saba and the ladies at Mu'ooz restaurant to take the risk and be open, willing to host this event!  Although we all knew it would be wonderful in the end - the novelty and size of the event plus the clash with the Independence day celebrations may have caused some sleepless nights!!  Saba, the heart felt speech really added something special to the night and Im glad you all got to let your hair down in the dance!  Thanks to Erimas for the wonderful traditional music – it was so special to have this throughout the night and to accompany the women dancing.

Thanks to Susan and students at Milpera for responding to the last minute request to create all those wonderful creative bookmarks that each guest was able to take home as a personal memento and connection to the students.

Thanks Milpera staff, Helen, Jane, Gabriella, Madeline and to UQ staff Merril, Jodie and Brie for your attendance and support of this initiative.

And lastly thanks again for all of you for coming and enjoying some great food and company!  We hope to see some of you at Refugee Week celebrations!

We look forward to seeing you all at World refugee day celebrations. http://www.refugeetutoring.org/world_refugee_day/what_vortcs_is_doing.html

NERD FEST

The coordination team recently had its first "OT nerdfest". . .what's that you ask? Just imagine the awesome foursome, no official OOFRAS business, a lounge room, professional development, shared discussion and learning, laughing, dreaming, scheming, continuous nibbles and a bottle of wine!

Other than deciding we needed regular "OT nerdfests", we resolved to have an end of year OOFRAS shin-dig. . .so watch this space!!!

Last year we had a massive gig - "Beyond the Night" which was an amazing success in generosity and community spirit that resulted in OOFRAS being able to sponsor an OT from a developing economy who works with refugees to the World OT Congress. Our next gig will invest in a local initiative... Beyond the Night 2008, here we come!!

We will also be looking for a handful of OTs and students to partner with us in the gig by forming a Queensland group. . . more news soon!

In the mean time we suggest you get your live music fix by attending the "Rock for Refugees 2007" gig at The Zoo (Fortitude Valley) on Friday October 19 2007. Come and support the Refugee Claimants Centre (Windsor) and the local artists who have given their time and talent to support this initiative! Check out the website - www.rockforrefugees.com. Some of the local artists include:

  • The Incredible Strand
  • Glasshouse
  • My Fiction
  • The Reversals
  • Sue58
  • Plus: Belly dancers & visuals by mindygirl
