About OOFRAS
OOFRAS: What's in a name?
Occupational Opportunities for Refugees & Asylum Seekers reflects who we are, who we work with and what we work for.
- Who we are: OTs passionate about the healing and health promoting power of occupation
- Who we work for: Refugees & asylum seekers experiencing occupational deprivation in detention and the community
- What we work for: Occupational opportunity that enables access to purposeful, meaningful, healing and health promoting occupations is both the means and end of occupational justice
Purpose: Why we exist
OOFRAS exists to build the capacity of occupational therapists to offer equitable, quality and accessible occupational therapy services for refugees in partnership with the multicultural sector and community.
Values: Principles that guide us
- Humans: We acknowledge that we are inherently occupational beings by nature
- Health: We assert the human right to create and maintain wellbeing by accessing a healthy repertoire of occupations
- Occupational justice: We strive for equitable opportunities to participate in occupations necessary to survive and thrive
- OT profession: Our OT community has a moral (human rights) and professional (ethics and expertise) duty to respond to occupational deprivation
- Sustainable synergy: It's just not strategic to care, invest, learn and contribute all by yourself - contributing to sustainable systems that support synergy and participating in them is everybody's business
Mission: How we work
OOFRAS supports OTs to move towards occupational justice initiatives with refugees and asylum seekers.
The continuum is conceptualized as: inspire --> empower --> equip --> initiate.
• Inspire with IDEAS - engage the heart and imagination
• Empower with KNOWLEDGE - engage the mind
• Equip with SKILL DEVELOPMENT opportunities - engage the hands
• OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES – initiate with heart, mind, and hands
This continuum reflects differing degrees of desire and capacity for involvement. Also, the fact that OTs bring diverse skills, experience and needs. We hope any OT can find something of value at OOFRAS for the next step in their journey.
